Obituary: Mueller, Helga

Helga Mueller was born June 6, 1934, in Frankfurt, Germany, to Heinrich and Wilma Metz. She died Feb. 23 in Torrance, Calif.

Mueller was the mother of Kevin, mother-in-law of Laura, grandmother of Terren, of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

With son and daughter-in-law at her side, Helga Mueller, age 69, passed away from pulmonary failure, due to motor neuron disease, following years of struggle with related dementia.

After growing up in war-torn Germany, Helga Metz immigrated to the United States in 1957 with Robert Mueller, whom she later married. They settled in the Bay Area and, in 1965, she gave birth to Kevin. Divorced in 1971, she went on to raise her son through college. For the last 13 years, she made a permanent home out of her weekend retreat in Truckee, working as a bookkeeper and hostess at the High Camp restaurants in Squaw Valley, until she retired in 1998. She was in love with the mountains and the great outdoors, which she enjoyed by hiking, backpacking and skiing every free moment. She was very proud of her family, especially her grandson, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Services at the Squaw Valley Chapel to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Association of Frontotemporal Dementias (AFTD), P.O. Box 7191, St. David’s, PA 19087.
