Special to the Sun

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Following its premiere at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, the documentary feature film and#8220;Miss Representationand#8221; will be screened at the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation Queen of Hearts luncheon Feb. 15 at the Resort at Squaw Creek, Olympic Valley. The Queen of Hearts luncheon is open to the public for the first time.

Written, produced and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and#8220;Miss Representationand#8221; exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful. and#8220;Miss Representation” made its national broadcast debut on OWN: the Oprah Winfrey Network Oct. 20, 2011.

Newsom is a filmmaker, actress and advocate for women, girls, and their families. Coinciding with the distribution of her film, Newsom launched MissRepresentation.org, a call-to-action movement that gives women and girls the tools to realize their full potential. She currently serves as the founder and chief executive officer.

In 2011, Newsom was named a and#8220;Power Womanand#8221; by New York Moves Magazine and has also been featured in O Magazine, NPR’s All Things Considered, ABC’s Top Line, The Huffington Post, Forbes, The Daily Beast, Good Day LA, The Chicago Tribune, Fox News, Vogue and SELF.

and#8220;Life is precious. Since we get to live life out loud, shouldn’t we make the most of it?and#8221; is Newsom’s life motto. She is making the most of hers while helping others on the way.

and#8220;Miss Representationand#8221; includes stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics like Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Rosario Dawson, Jackson Katz, Jean Kilbourne and Gloria Steinem. The film offers startling facts and statistics that will leave viewers shaken and armed with a new perspective.

and#8220;We are thrilled to have so many outreach opportunities for Miss Representation. This film was made to be a change agent in our culture, to inspire both women and men to recognize women’s collective voice, leadership capacity and equal rights,and#8221; said Newsom.

In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty and sexuality: not in her capacity as a leader. While women have made strides in leadership over the past few decades, the U.S. is 90th in the world in terms of women in national legislatures and women hold only three percent of clout positions in mainstream media.

The distribution of the film will coincide with a social action campaign led by MissRepresentation.org. The campaign seeks to empower women and girls to challenge limiting labels in order to fully realize their potential, and ultimately transform our culture for the betterment of all. A portion of the film proceeds will be donated to women’s leadership initiatives led by partnership beneficiaries that include Girls for A Change, Girls Inc., The International Museum of Women, Step Up Women’s Network, The Women’s Media Center and The White House Project. Together with these partners, MissRepresentation.org is organizing hundreds of thousands of individuals to participate in a series of small actions that will ultimately lead to a cross-generational revolution to eradicate gender stereotypes and create lasting cultural and sociological change that will benefit not only women, but the world at large.
