Opinion: A health care cost comparison

After having kidney stones last year, I went for a follow-up appointment in Reno to a urologist. He advised me to have a KUB abdominal X ray.

With the benefit of hindsight after my last trip to Tahoe Forest Hospital for a dislocated pinky finger that was billed out at about $2,500 (yes, I had insurance and was in/out in less than 1 hour) inclusive of doctors fees, ER, etc., I decided to do a bit of research.

I spent the best part of a day calling Blue Shield of California and various other institutions trying to figure out the best way to go about it cost effectively.

The end result? Tahoe Forest: $303 plus $31 for radiologists (30 percent discount for cash). Reno Diagnostics: $39.50.

Should we take a vote on which health provider’s CEO gets a six-figure salary with all the bells and whistles?
