Opinion: Be sure to say thank you to a teacher today

May 13 is the nationally-recognized Day of the Teacher. I would like to thank teachers and school personnel for their service to the students of Tahoe Truckee Unified School District.

Almost everyone has attended school, but few recognize the extent of the duties teachers are asked to fulfill. These include preparing lessons, maintaining discipline, attending meetings, taking courses to be current in their professions, maintaining records, communicating effectively with parents and others, correcting student work, and on and on.

One other thing that educators do that is not well-known is that they are “mandated reporters.” This means that if a student is suspected of being psychologically, physically, or sexually abused, the teacher is required to report this to school authorities by law.

Young people need advocates, I believe. When teachers leave school each day, their work goes on. Thank you, educators, for all you do.
