Opinion: Dismayed at proposed Tahoe Expedition Academy school

This is in response to the Tahoe Expedition Academy’s proposed site in Martis Valley.

As a resident and outdoor enthusiast who enjoys the beauty and quiet of Martis Valley, I am saddened by the thought of building a 60,000-square-foot facility on a 42-acre site off Schaffer Mill Road. It is surprising that an organization that teaches environmental stewardship is willing to destroy a beautiful piece of land, solely for a privileged few.

The carbon footprint alone that this building will take up is irreversible. Why not use existing office space, which stands empty in the area, or invest in South Lake Tahoe, which desperately needs it? And finally, please consider this school has only been in existence since 2011, starting with a student body of 72 and stating on their website that the number has “nearly doubled.”

Does that justify a 60,000-square-foot facility? If you love Martis Valley, please write your Placer County Supervisor, Jennifer Montgomery, District 5, and/or our senator, Ted Gaines, to say, “leave our valley alone.”
