Opinion: Don’t praise California’s Prop 13

Shelly Purdy’s hackneyed diatribe blaming Proposition 13 for California’s education woes in the Oct. 5 Sierra Sun story, “Prop. 13 and formation of the Tahoe Truckee Excellence in Education Foundation,” does not hold water. After adjusting for inflation, we spend 30% percent more per pupil than we did before the 1978 passage of Proposition 13.

Proposition 13 continues to be the scapegoat for an education establishment in California that refuses to look inward and evaluate how to make better use of the generous revenue taxpayers already provide.
