The comment period for Canyon Springs’ Revised Draft Environmental Impact Report closed Nov. 20. An unprecedented number of citizens and agencies wrote letters questioning the adequacy of this document and expressed concern and doubt regarding the merits not only of the RDEIR, but of the original DEIR from March 2013.

The original DEIR brought in over 75 letters in opposition to the project, and as of Tuesday, I counted 65 letters on the town’s website in opposition to the RDEIR.

It is incredible that an amended technical document, difficult to follow and exhausting to read, could compel over 65 people to write letters expressing their doubts that the numerous impacts caused by the project will be brought to less than significant levels.

What a shame that we must be forced to slog through such a process. The people of Truckee deserve more. We deserve the right to have our concerns addressed in a public forum prior to the Final EIR hearing, not relegated to a bunch of volleying on the part of an out of town consultant and a developer who refuses to make meaningful changes to the project.

This is an example of land use planning at its worst. Let’s stick our heads in the sand, wait for the single public hearing to discuss the Final Environmental Impact Report and then sit through hours and hours of testimony from the public expressing why this is the worst project to ever come before the Town of Truckee.

Oh and then we can do it all again when this developer forecloses on the property and another person proposes the same terrible project. Deja vu … enough is enough. Let’s pool our resources and buy this property so we never have to discuss it again.
