Opinion: Help keep the Truckee Pro Rodeo alive and well

Thank you to our Truckee community for making the 2016 Truckee Pro Rodeo a success!

The Truckee Pro Rodeo Association strives to create an event that keeps the western heritage of our community alive, and that is fun for all to attend. The 2016 Truckee Pro Rodeo drew the largest crowds we have seen in over five years, and was undoubtedly a success. If you were able to make it to the rodeo this year, we hope you had a hootin’, hollerin’, boot-stompin’ good time!

The Truckee Pro Rodeo Association is an entirely volunteer based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so every sponsorship dollar, donation, and rodeo attendee makes a difference! As an indication of our commitment to our town, all profit from the Truckee Pro Rodeo is put right back into our community.

The Rodeo Association donates to numerous local organizations and youth sports teams each year, and we also provide annual scholarships to local graduating high school students.

At this time, the Rodeo Association is accepting applications for three $500 grants we will be awarding within our community. Organizations are invited to submit a letter by January 31, 2017, explaining their mission, programs, and need for support. Please visit http://www.truckeerodeo.org for details.

Without the Truckee Pro Rodeo, our town would be at risk of losing historic McIver Arena, the rodeo grounds, to redevelopment. Maintaining the tradition of the Truckee Pro Rodeo allows us to preserve this historic site that was donated to our community by one of the most notable families in Truckee’s history, the McIver family.

The McIver family shared the goal of the Truckee Pro Rodeo Association and our supporters, to keep Truckee’s western heritage alive.

If you’re interested in getting involved with the Truckee Pro Rodeo, we are always looking for more help! Join us for our Community Thank You & Holiday Party on December 1, 2016, at Bar of America from 5-9 p.m. to learn more about our organization, get to know our volunteers, and watch the first night of the National Finals Rodeo.

Thank you for your support and interest in keeping Truckee’s western heritage alive! Mark your calendars for the 2017 Truckee Pro Rodeo, the last weekend of August.
