Opinion: Kudos to Placer supes for positive Martis Valley West vote
I am a Lake Tahoe native, raised in Zephyr Cove, and now I am very fortunate to be able to continue to call this community my home.
My family has been living at Lake Tahoe since the 1950s, and we have experienced a lot of changes over the years. I have seen most of my childhood friends move away in order to pursue their careers.
However, I have been very lucky to be able to find a career here, to raise my family here, and to be involved in my community. I am, and have been a basketball coach for the school district for over 10 years, a volunteer for numerous organizations like AYSO, cub scouts, girl scouts, Parks & Rec, Boys & Girls Club, Truckee Golf and countless charity events.
As a life-long Tahoe native, I realized long ago that people will continue to come to this great place and that development happens. Understanding that the Martis Valley West Project is the last big parcel marked for development in the Martis Valley, and that it includes land conservation that is unparalleled, I believe this plan represents a huge win/win for conservation efforts and development options alike.
Mountainside Partners has been part of this community for nearly 20 years. They have already demonstrated that responsible development leads to positive community development in the way of jobs, recreation and long-term family involvement in the community.
Mountainside Partners has proven that their developments strive to make improvements by incorporating transportation and work force housing, building LEED certified facilities, Audubon certified sanctuaries, etc.
Of the communities created within the Martis Valley Community Plan, many have broad recreational amenities operated by a club or a homeowner’s association. These organizations provide sustainable year-round jobs for hundreds of families, and career opportunities for local residents, like myself.
The organization I work for (Tahoe Mountain Club), which was created by similar development, employs upward of 250 employees, many of whom are full-time, year-round, benefited employees.
These folks, like me, make up the fabric of this community. Projects like this provide opportunity for local professionals to find meaningful careers and live in this incredible place.
The Martis Valley West Project is a great plan, and it is the right plan for our community. The Board of Supervisors made the right decision with their vote of support for the project.
