Opinion: Not believing in global warming doesn’t change its scientific validity

Regarding the Letter to the Editor in the Feb. 5 edition of the Sierra Sun, “Global warming still only a theory,” let’s get something straight: By saying “still only a theory,” one proves categorically one’s mis-comprehension of the scientific definition of the word “theory.”

As noted by Tia Ghose in Scientific American’s “Livescience,” “Part of the problem is that the word ‘theory’ means something very different in lay language than it does in science: A scientific theory is an explanation of some aspect of the natural world that has been substantiated through repeated experiments or testing. But to the average Jane or Joe, a theory is just an idea that lives in someone’s head, rather than an explanation rooted in experiment and testing.”

The theory of global warming (like the theory of evolution) meets the scientific definition of having been “substantiated through repeated experiments or testing.”

If you want to assert that you don’t believe in global warming for reasons of your own, go right ahead and do so. That’s your right. But your belief doesn’t alter the scientific validity of the theory.
