Opinion: Please vote ‘yes’ on Nevada County’s Measure A
Please join me in voting Yes on Measure A to preserve, protect and improve Nevada County Libraries, including our local branch that is in need of a good amount of TLC from the community.
As a child, I spent long afternoons in the children’s room at our small town library in Connecticut — reading my way through the Beverly Cleary shelf (Ramona the Pest, Henry Huggins and more).
In my early teens, I rode the local train to the larger, neighboring library to search the stacks for history term paper resources. As a new mom in Truckee in 2004, Wednesday mornings meant story hour — a beacon of hope and good cheer after a sleepless night with a teething toddler. At every stage of my life, libraries have drawn me in — by the endless rows of books, the exhilarating access to information, and the joy of belonging to a larger community of learners.
Today, as a local K/1 teacher, I hand out library card applications to my students in the hopes that they, too, will be drawn into the world of public libraries.
Our Truckee Library deserves a chance to be a vibrant, public hub that draws in readers and thinkers of all ages– a place that encourages our youth to explore new genres, to connect to their community, and to be inspired.
Sales tax currently contributes 65% of the Library’s annual budget. If Measure A does not pass, the Truckee Library’s budget will be reduced by 50%.
If Measure A does pass, the Truckee Library will benefit directly with increased hours, improved information/technology access and an expanded materials collection. Additionally, Measure A will increase funding for children and teen programming, materials and events.

I thought I’d spend the morning at the county supervisors meeting this week.
