Opinion: Vote for Michael Babich for District 5 Supervisor
The slate mailer referenced in this letter is among many prepared this primary season by a group called “California Voter Guide,” which is not an official political party organization. According to the mailer, candidate name appearances within do “not necessarily imply endorsement of others appearing in this mailer, nor does it imply endorsement of, or opposition to, any issues set forth in this mailer.” Visit calvoterguide.com to learn more.
My family and I look at Lake Tahoe as our second home. As a longtime lover of the Tahoe area for the past 40 years, having worked over those years for Pacific Bell-SBC (now retired), installing and maintaining E911 systems from Grass Valley to Tahoe City and beyond, I was taken back by David Stepner’s opinion piece on April 4: “Keep Placer County board seat on our side of the Sierra.”
Mr. Stepner was fair, but supported incumbent District 5 Supervisor Jennifer Montgomery, because she is “local.” From speaking with supervisor candidate Michael Babich, confirming his website information, and reading various Q-and-A forums, it is clear to me that he is very Tahoe-minded.
He is the only candidate that will at least publish an “Issues” website page, and was the one who plainly said in the Sierra Sun (May 24, “Election 2016: Placer supe candidates sound off on Tahoe-area issues”) that Tahoe taxpayers sent $3.3 million more to the county than was returned.
Michael and his family love this area. Most North Lake Tahoe residents aren’t native, but Babich and his family chose to live in the county area between the Sierra and his work on cancer near the UC Davis Medical School. They even subscribed to this very
Sierra Sun in the 1990s when he was a Professor at the University of Illinois, looking forward to a return here.
By the way, since their return 16 years ago, he and his daughter have skied all 15 resorts around the Tahoe area.
With Montgomery, a Democrat, apparently paying to get on a conservative Republican candidate slate mailer we got in the west county, it looks like the guy “downhill” is the one looking after our interests.
I agree with Mr. Stepner’s conclusion: Please consider these thoughts when casting your vote in June.
