Opinion: Vote ‘yes’ on Nevada County’s Measure A
Forty years ago, Truckee celebrated a major community achievement — the opening of the Truckee Library. A grassroots effort between motivated citizens, the Nevada County Library system, Federal and State funding, and a private land donation transformed the community book mobile into a permanent structure.
This year Truckee citizens have an opportunity to not only celebrate the library’s 40th Anniversary, but lay the foundation for strengthening a key resource in our town.
Our Truckee Library is currently supported by a county-wide 1/8-cent sales tax voted for by local residents in both 1998 and 2002. These revenues now account for 65% of the Nevada County Library’s total operating budget.
The November election ballot will include Measure A to extend this tax for yet another 15 years. Measure A will also increase the tax to ¼ cent, resulting in 25 cents for every $100 dollars spent in Nevada County on taxable items.
This increase will sustain current operations while allowing enhancement and extension of children’s programs, teen services and access to technology. Not renewing this measure will result in operation cuts and reductions in services as they now stand.
Truckee is a strong, creative and exceptional town. We have adapted to growth and development in various ways over the past forty years. It is our turn to participate in the growth and development of our people and improve informational access, literacy and meaningful resources for all ages.
This November, re-invest in our community, our residents and our families with continued opportunities to read, learn, connect, create and contribute to Truckee’s quality of life. Vote Yes on Measure A and ensure funding for the current and future operation of Truckee’s library.
