Opinion: We don’t need a new campground or development at Lake Tahoe

What is it about a quiet and pristine ridgeline that has been untouched by man, other than hikers and lovers of nature, that attracts developers who think they can make it “better for the community?”

I believe we can all read between the lines about what the answer to my question is.

“The first new campground in the Tahoe Basin in 20 years” — regarding the 550-unit Brockway Campground proposal from Mountainside Partners (formerly East West Partners) — is a promotion that has received a fair amount of press coverage. The intended assumption is that this must be good. After all, we as a nation, love “firsts,” don’t we?

This proposed development, however, in an environmentally sensitive area like Tahoe should raise red flags. In this case, it is rather nonsensical and should elicit strong skepticism and concern.

What’s next for our area: the first new highway in 20 years, the first new ski resort in 20 years, the first new marina in 20 years?

The “first in 20 years” milestone I would like to see is “NO to more development” — especially on our basin ridgelines that need to be protected.
