Opinion: Where were TTUSD trustees, staff at telethon?

This past weekend, I spent a delightful six hours watching most all of the Truckee High School Band Telethon.

There were wonderful clips of band and group performances, and there was live entertainment with band members and the band director, Mr. Steele, all willingly and enthusiastically performing a myriad of “challenges” as requested by donors.

However, I was waiting for an appearance or, at least, a pre-recorded message from TTUSD school board, administrators, or staff demonstrating support for the band’s efforts. I wondered if the coaches, who see the Pep Band and Marching Band show up during football and basketball games, would show up and show their support? And who can forget the first-class performances of the Jazz Band members who show up all over the community just for the asking?

I don’t think the board, administration, or staff of Truckee High really know what a great program they have. In the future, I hope they take a lesson from the band students and “Just show up!”

An older friend I made when I began here in 2016 called the other day to talk about the paper. I hadn’t heard from her in awhile and, well, I’ve been here just long enough…
