Our View: A ‘berm buster’ on the way?

“Q: There’s a berm in my driveway!”

“A: The Town has a policy of not removing driveway berms. It is too time consuming and too costly.”

That tidbit from the Town of Truckee’s Web site on snow removal.

“What happened with the fees we pay per parcel ($95) for snow removal and taxes for road maintenance? Isn’t snow removal part of road maintenance? What’s the purpose of snow removal if a berm is created that prevents people from getting in and out of their driveway?”

This tidbit from Reiner D. Meier, a Tahoe Donner resident, in a My Turn guest column in the Sierra Sun last month.

Seems there are lots of questions floating about concerning berms. Well, we’ll add another question to the pile. What’s up with the town purchasing a $92,985 compact John Deere loader and blower to remove snow “accidentally blown into residential driveways during normal snow blowing operations.”?

Could that new piece of machinery be the “berm buster” of more than a few residents’ dreams?

Whatever the case, we tend to agree with one of the readers who commented on Meier’s guest column.

“In regard to berms … as my grandmother reminded me, and I quote ” “If you live in the jungle, you must expect snakes, in the desert there will be sand and if you live in the Sierra, EXPECT SNOW.”

Like three feet of it in mid-April.
