OUR VIEW: A new face at the airport

A new era is taking off at the Truckee Tahoe Airport District, where David Gotschall is settling in as the new general manager.

Gotschall began his job at the airport April 9, and in an interview with the Sierra Sun this week pledged a higher standard of community outreach by the airport district.

Last fall, the airport board election became a hot topic when simmering concerns over airport noise and management led some to complain the district was out of touch with its constituents. Several vocal anti-noise candidates ran, unsuccessfully, for the airport board, and we received dozens of letters, both pro and con, discussing the issues. While the debate may not have appealed to all, it did focus much-needed attention on our community airport.

Now, by hiring Gotschall, the airport has found a leader to guide their policies. Since June 2000, there has been a management vacuum at the airport, despite very capable work by both the board and interim general manager in the meantime. Hopefully Gotschall will work to heal any rifts between the airport and the community.

The airport is also forming a new noise advisory committee composed of both residents and pilots, a group that will work to address the concerns locals have voiced about noisy planes and jets.

The airport is taking positive steps to work for the good of all Truckee, and we applaud their efforts.
