The natural beauty that surrounds the Truckee-Tahoe community is matched only by the beautiful generosity of the people who call this place home.

Time after time, co-workers, neighbors and strangers give to those who have been injured in accidents, families left homeless by fires or causes that inspire giving ” either money or time.

Unfortunately, another call for help is going out. Over the weekend, the below-normal temperatures chilling the area wreaked havoc on the Truckee Donner Senior Center’s kitchen and dining room. Pipes burst causing extensive water damage.

And while things can be repaired in time, there is an immediate need for an interim kitchen to prepare up to 100 meals a day for our elderly neighbors spread out between Truckee and the North Shore. But Sierra Senior Services, the non-profit outfit that operates the Meals on Wheels program in the region, needs something more than your regular Kenmore oven and dishwasher.

What’s needed is a commercial-grade kitchen where these pros can continue to serve people who genuinely need help.

“We are strategizing what our options are in both Truckee and around the lake, but we have limited options to meet the needs of the program, and meal production, and government regulations,” said Melanie Kauffman, the executive director of the Senior Center.

Kudos to Blue Sky Home Center for providing temporary office space for the Sierra Senior Services staff. That will give them a clean, dry place from which tap into that generous community of ours.
