Our View: Keeping fire safe in the forefront

A plan has been on the drawing board in Nevada County for several years now that most residents should be familiar with but probably aren’t.

In light of what Tahoe-Truckee saw this summer with wildfire and what’s occurring in Southern California as you read this, the purpose of this plan should be of interest to everyone in the area.

I’ll let the the Fire Safe Council of Nevada County explain itself. The council “was formed in 1998 by a small group of concerned citizens in an effort to start a movement to create a fire safe Nevada County. Over the past six years the organization has grown into what it is today.”

And that is a plan proposing a comprehensive, scientifically-based assessment of the wildfire hazards and risks within Nevada County and reduce the damage and loss from wildfires by placing emphasis on what preventative tasks need to be completed.

And you, layman or expert, can get involved.

Officials anticipate reaching consensus on setting priorities for hazardous fuels mitigation soon. A meeting of the Nevada County Fire Safe Council will be held Nov. 7 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Best Western Truckee Tahoe Inn, 11331 Brockway Road.
