OUR VIEW: Road work season is here

Sierra Sun staff

It’s a Truckee tradition that can be counted upon – away go the snow boots and shovels, out come the yellow cones and bulldozers.

This summer promises to be as busy a construction season as ever up here. The Truckee bypass project will get nearer to completion, while Caltrans will also be overhauling an 11-mile stretch of Interstate 80 between Truckee and Floriston. That portion of I-80, as any frequent traveler to Reno knows, is rocky and cracked and hasn’t been replaced since it was built more than 40 years ago.

Besides the major projects, both Caltrans and the Town of Truckee will doubtlessly undertake several more projects this summer, from roadworks to repainting faded markings.

It’s important for locals and visitors alike to appreciate the need for this work, even if it can cause us inconvenience. Truckee winters are tough on the roads here.

We urge caution and respect for those working on our roads this summer. Sure, it’s no fun being stuck in an hour traffic jam going from Truckee to Reno, but the work is necessary. In years past there have been incidents of “road rage” toward construction workers.

Let’s remember that these workers are doing their job to make our lives easier, so maybe we should lay off the insults and obscenities and salute them for a job well done.
