Our View: Solving ‘down-the-hill’ disconnect
The distance between “down the hill” and the eastern portions of Placer and Nevada counties is again proving to be challenging.
Earlier in July the Placer County Planning Commission approved the Sandy Beach development in Tahoe Vista ” an hour-plus drive away in Auburn.
That understandably raised the ire of more than a few North Shore residents who felt that holding the meeting in Auburn during the day took their concerns out of the decision-making process.
Placer officials, meanwhile, contend the commission holds at least four meetings a year in Tahoe, and in the case of Sandy Beach, the next Tahoe meeting isn’t scheduled until September. Commissioners did not want to delay the project until then and subsequently voted not to continue the decision. Plus, officials said, there was plenty of time for residents to comment on the project.
A similar disconnect ” right or wrong ” is being assigned to Placer County Supervisor Bruce Kranz regarding his decision on the Kings Beach commercial core plan. Kranz, who sits on the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board due to his supervisorial seat, voted in June for a four-lane plan through Kings Beach versus a three-lane plan.
Depending on who one talks to, Kranz’s vote went against what “most” people in Kings Beach wanted. Kranz, who hails from the “other side of the hill” in Meadow Vista just isn’t plugged into what the folks on the eastside want, goes the complaint.
Tahoe City and Kings Beach incorporating any time soon isn’t going to happen. Truckee incorporated in 1993 to wrest its fate from the “powers that be” on the west slope. Without realistic recourse for the North Shore, it’s time for Placer County to at least consider more than four meetings a year in Tahoe for the planning commission or any other body that deals with east county issues.
Placer officials, however, aren’t totally blind to the situation. The Placer County Board of Supervisors will be in Kings Beach today at the conference center to take action on the Kings Beach core plan. They will surely get a good deal of “input,” something that wouldn’t happen if the meeting were held in Auburn.
In this day and age where time is money, fuel is just as costly and Auburn and Nevada City are a long haul away, both residents and county officials must keep in mind that there’s a fine line between running an efficient government and alienating taxpayers. We’re confident that the “down-the-hill disconnect” can be figured out.
