Perea deserves community gratitude

Sierra Sun opinion

A law enforcement career that spans the ages.

Sgt. Ron Perea, Nevada County’s most senior sheriff’s deputy and a 32-year Truckee veteran officer, is calling it quits next month, on to greener pastures, as they say.

Perea’s career has seen Truckee grow from a western outpost, to mild-mannered ski town to one of Northern California’s tourist hubs. During the more than three decades he spent on the force, people have flocked in, along with their kids and their problems, and he has been there to lend a helping hand, keeping the community safe.

Perhaps it was inevitable, then, that Truckee would grow to a size where it would incorporate and eventually decide to form its own police force. The Truckee Police Department has done well transitioning from the old way of doing things to the new, incorporating, we are sure, many of the philosophies that Perea and his department had about local policing.

And, of course, the work of the sheriff’s department continues. And Perea’s legacy in the department will live on.

Ron deserves heartfelt thanks from Truckee for all he’s done during his time in uniform. His is a career that has truly spanned the ages.
