Petition a valiant effort

Ironically, Truckee’s growing transient population may have been the downfall of a proposed ballot initiative that would have, if approved by voters, turned back the hands of time on local development.

Petitioners presented a valiant effort by gathering more than 1,000 signatures to put the recent approval of the Old Greenwood development before voters this fall. The number of signatures from local registered voters, however, fell just short of the necessary minimum of 738 that would have been required.

Signature gatherers’ efforts may not have been in vain, though. Residents of Truckee, new and old, will be holding Old Greenwood under a microscope, and future developments will likely move forward with caution.

It’s a shame to see a large-scale opposition come together so late in the game.

For what it is worth, the number of signatures gathered in such a short span (approximately two weeks) is impressive, and indicates that the question of Truckee’s future in regards to new development is far from settled.
