Project Linus: Truckee Junior Girl Scouts make and donate security blankets

Submitted to

TRUCKEE and#8212; Local Truckee Junior Girl Scout Troop 116 participated in a great community service effort.

This 10-girl troop became and#8220;blanketeersand#8221; and handmade colorful no-sew fleece blankets for an organization called Project Linus. The blankets were taken to a local chapter in Nevada City/Grass Valley area, tagged and distributed to children in hospitals, shelters, or anywhere a child could use a warm hug.

Started in Christmas 1995, Project Linus has delivered over 3 and a half million handmade blankets and afghans to children birth to 18 years old.

The organization asks for only handmade blankets because recipients are awed someone would take the time and care to make a blanket for a stranger in need. Their mission in to give children a sense of security, warmth, and comfort during difficult times.

Troop 116 read their blog before diving into the project, and it was truly inspiring. Some teenage victims of Hurricane Katrina who had been relocated to Texas were blanket recipients, they cried when they all received the blankets, and still sleep with them today!

Girl Scouts even have a Project Linus patch each troop member has earned and loves. It was a truly inspiring event. Anyone can help, check out to see how.
