Prosser Creek gets another chance

During a week when most students are reveling in the glory of spring break, some parents got their own good news from the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District.

Prosser Creek Charter School battled back from the brink of closure this school year, and finally, last week, had its charter renewed for a five-year term.

It’s good news for the portion of local children that depend on the charter school as an alternative to our local education system.

Many parents find that their children excel in the Prosser Creek environment. For the most part, they led the charge that resulted in the charter renewal, despite problems created by the school in its own bookkeeping – to the tune of several million dollars (depending who you talk to).

Anybody who has followed the issue knows that opinions about the solvency and the value of the school in our community became heated on both sides of the issue, especially during election time when two candidates with connections to the school garnered significant numbers of votes. Maybe last week’s decision can put some of the bad feelings to rest.

Hopefully Prosser Creek can continue to repair itself, justify its accounting and fulfill its mission for the sake of local students. We all know it has a long way to go.

Thank you TTUSD for giving the school another chance. And to Prosser Creek, make the most of it.
