Public television to celebrate Black History Month
SACRAMENTO and#8212; In celebration of Black History Month, KVIE Public Television will broadcast programs that honor the spirit, creativity, and determination of significant heroes of the Civil Rights Era, as well as important individuals in history and today.
The first program to air will be KVIEand#8217;s original series, ViewFinder, which sheds light on our regional history. In and#8220;ViewFinder: The Legacy of Mary Ellen Pleasant,and#8221; learn about a woman ahead of her time; born a slave, she became known as and#8220;The Mother of Civil Rightsand#8221; in California. ViewFinder traces Pleasantand#8217;s life as an international abolitionist, a prosperous entrepreneur, and a civil-rights activist who helped alter modern-day civil rights law. This program airs Tuesday, Feb. 2, 10:30 p.m. on KVIE Channel 6.
What made America? What makes us? In and#8220;Faces of America with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.: Our American Stories,and#8221; the latest tools of genealogy and genetics are used to explore the family histories of 12 renowned Americans, including musician Yo-Yo Ma, actress Meryl Streep and television host/heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz. Looking beyond the African-American experience to the wider immigrant story, Professor Gates unravels the American tapestry, following the threads of his guestsand#8217; lives back to their earliest origins around the globe. Along the way, the many stories he uncovers and#8212; of displacement and homecoming, of material success and dispossession, of assimilation and discrimination and#8212; illuminate the American experience. The series premieres Wednesdays, Feb. 10-March 3, from 8-9 p.m. on KVIE Channel 6.
In an artful celebration of Black History Month, President and Mrs. Obama host a concert in the White House East Room. In and#8220;Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movementand#8221; will include performances by Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Seal, Smokey Robinson, and the Blind Boys of Alabama. This program airs Thursday, Feb. 11, 10 p.m. on KVIE Channel 6.
