TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; After a dry January, the Sierra received a one-two storm punch in mid-February and early March leaving Tahoe ski areas with as much as nine new feet of snow. With an epic spring ski season predicted, thereand#8217;s still time to get in on the Tahoe Fundand#8217;s program that rewards those who purchase a special Tahoe license plate with a free ticket from one of nine ski area partners.
Launched in January, the Plate For Powder Program represents a thoughtful collaboration between the bi-state nonprofit Tahoe Fund and like-minded Lake Tahoe-area ski areas that provided ticket incentives. The program has helped to jump-start license plate sales that fund bike trails, lakefront parks, interpretive programs and other tangible projects that enhance the Tahoe experience for residents and visitors alike.
and#8220;During the last several weeks many people have shown their support for Lake Tahoe by purchasing these licenses plates in both Nevada and California,and#8221; reported Cindy Gustafson, president of the Tahoe Fund. and#8220;However, there are still some who are on the fence. The Tahoe Fund works with the California Tahoe Conservancy and the Nevada Division of State Lands as well as public and private entities to identify and obtain funding for on-the-ground projects that support conservation, recreation and environmental education in the Lake Tahoe basin.
The Conservancy redesigned the California plate earlier this year, and turned to the Tahoe Fund to help boost sales in both states. The California and Nevada Tahoe plates now generate about $1.5 million annually for conservation and recreation projects in the Tahoe basin.
Jim Lawrence, administrator of the Nevada Division of State Lands, said the Plate for Powder Program supports the Tahoe Fundand#8217;s mission to better connect people to the natural and cultural resources of Lake Tahoe. and#8220;Buying a Tahoe license plate should be a must-do for anyone who wants to help protect and enjoy this special place,and#8221; he said, adding the skiing and boarding has never been better.
