Put brakes on project

The time may not be right to go ahead with the approval process for a proposed 2,177-acre development planned for Martis Valley.

By even the most conservative estimates, Siller Ranch, as it is dubbed by developer DMB Highlands, will have a big, if not huge, impact on local life.

Anyone who has driven through the Martis Valley during peak traffic times knows that the infrastructure can barely handle the density that we have TODAY. With already approved projects going up throughout the Truckee area, including Martis Valley, that density is going to be further increased, and infrastructure problems will undoubtedly be exacerbated.

Although voices at the lake are meek compared to those in Auburn, where county power is concentrated, it is time to be heard. This is not necessarily a flat-out “No” vote on the project (or a future amended, downsized version), but a call for planners to wait.

Wait until the Martis Valley Community Plan is finalized. Wait until we know what our roads will look like in 10 or 20 years. Wait to hear if the people who live here, and own property here, want something of this scale in their back yards.

Sure property owners have a right to develop their land to its most profitable potential, but not at the expense of something as simple as the ability to drive from point A to point B.
