I wanted to thank Sierra Family Services, the Placer County Probation Office and North Tahoe High School for holding a forum for parents to talk about the rising problem of addiction with our students and adults. I thought that the meeting was well received and it was informative. Im looking forward to the next forum where students will also be welcome. I believe it is important to have first-hand knowledge about whats happening and what can be done. My family and I have been very much involved in this problem, and felt it necessary to be present to give our personal account of whats been happening and how it has affected us.I wanted to thank the parent that got the nerve to call us and inform us of our sons involvement with drugs. It took a lot of nerve to call, and it was appreciated. Ive made a few calls myself, and will continue to make those calls when necessary. We must all look out for our children, even those that arent our own. Please take the time to make the call, it could possibly save a life. If you suspect that someone close to you is using drugs, please seek help. The longer the problem is ignored, the greater the chance of suffering a loss. You cannot reason with a person using drugs. As it was said at the forum, were an active village. There was a day when my sons nightmare came into public display. I was mortified! I thought this is a small community and everyone will know in two hours. It was at that moment that I realized that this small community was actually a benefit. I wasnt going to hide my head, but confront this problem head on. It would do no one, including my family or the community, any good to ignore what was happening. It was then that this small community wrapped its arms around us and helped us get through this difficult time in our lives. There are many people that need thanks from our family. We were given support by many people, both close at heart and just neighbors. Thank you all. You have NO idea how important it was for you to say something, give a hug or just your smile. My name is Mike Basile and I am writing this letter to the editor regarding the letter Keep our Kids Safe and Sober this Graduation. I am not writing this letter to talk down to or bash the letter writer. I am not arguing against her push to rid North Tahoe of drug and alcohol abuse. The writer states that since preschool the parents have done most of the fundraising for their kids for project graduation and she is right. The parents do most of the work. I am writing this to show that the students can and do put together fundraising for themselves. I play sports year round at North Tahoe High School. So far my soccer teammates and I have done most of our own fundraising. For example, both the boys and the girls soccer teams put on a golf tournament and raffle every summer to raise money for the upcoming season. The players and the players alone are responsible for getting sponsors to donate money and raffle prizes. The players are responsible for making and setting up the sponsors signs on each hole. Not just a printed sign, but a hand drawn sign that has a large amount of time and effort put into it. Both teams also hold car washes and barbecues that are run by the players. I am not saying that the parents do not help at all because they do and they do a great job. This is just one instance where students do work for themselves and are rewarded for it.Mike BasileNorth Tahoe
