To all my wonderful friends in the North Tahoe community: After 26 wonderful years of representing the people of North Tahoe on the NTPUD Board of Directors, I am retiring. I have enjoyed the opportunity to serve our community on the board for all of these past years and participating in the growth of our utility district. We now have the best beaches, a supportive community center, water and sewer service at a low cost and the finest workers anywhere. We can all be proud.Even though I will no longer be on the board, we must all continue to work together to keep our district strong and independent. For that reason I strongly recommend that on Nov. 7, you vote for Sue Daniels to fill my seat on the board and follow in my footsteps. Sue will bring to the board the tradition of a 52-year local Lake Tahoe family, the outlook and experience of a community business owner, a commitment to maintain the highest quality services at the lowest possible coast and personal knowledge of our recreation facilities. Equally important, Sue does not have the baggage of political entanglements or obligations.Just as I did for 26 years, Sue will represent our community, be available to talk and listen to each one of you, and insure that your districts business is conducted in public. Take my word for it, you will not be disappointed.I will miss you all more than I can say. However, I am confident that with Sue Daniels on the North Tahoe Utility District board, your interests will be in good hands.Norma SchwartzNorth Tahoe
At the public meeting on Aug. 22, the Town of Truckee Planning Commission demonstrated that the views of the citizens really do matter. In a unanimous vote, the commission removed Special Study Area 2 from the 2025 General Plan Update. In so doing they made a huge step forward toward saving the Ponderosa Golf Course. The future of affordable golf in Truckee looks bright. By its action, the commission demonstrated that the vision for Truckee in the 2025 General Plan Update draft is more than just words. It has real meaning.Several members of the commission said that they were brought to their decision by facts presented by local citizens. In a well-governed community, individuals can be heard and their views do matter.Members of the Planning Commission; Chair Cadie Olson, Bob Johnston, Nikki Riley and Cole Butler deserve the thanks of every Truckee citizen. We are lucky to have such fine people serving our community. They listened and they made sound judgments. They have sent a clear message to the Town Council, which has the final word on the Ponderosa Golf Course matter. We are confident that our council members will support the resolution of their planning commission.Bill Canning Truckee
I like the idea from the owner of the Ponderosa Golf Course (Tee-d off: Golf courses fate is heated topic Aug. 17 Sierra Sun) for the Tahoe Donner Recreation & Park District to operate a golf course. However, the district should consider acquiring the existing nine holes of the Ponderosa course. This would not require a General Plan amendment and would compliment community goals for open space and recreation. Harry N. Lalor Truckee
