Bob Yoder was a reference for an article in the Sacramento Bee on Truckee. Here is one of his comments: “For a resort community, Truckee has the biggest pool of affordable housing I’ve ever seen,” Yoder said. “It’s called Reno and it’s only 35 minutes away. A lot of (area workers) chose to commute. They sold their houses here for $500,000, moved to Reno and bought bigger houses for $200,000 and put $300,000 in the bank. Nobody forced them to do that.”Mr. Yoder has a different idea of why people commute from Reno than what I’ve heard from those commuting. I’ve heard they commute because they can’t afford to live here and most of them will never have a bank account with $300,000 in it with what they make working in a resort community. It’s easy for those of us who have the resources to enjoy our life here in Truckee to be so cavalier, isn’t it Mr. Yoder? Your compassion is exceeded only by your greed.Marcia WatsonTruckeeA real St. NickTalk about Santa! We have a real Santa helping the seniors and the disabled at the senior center of Truckee. His name is Hans Ostermen. He is the driver for the Dial-A-Ride. He is one of the kindest people I know. He is always helping us take in our groceries and packages, going out of his way to make sure we all have what we need.We all love him and appreciate his help, not just one day a year, but all year. He is truly our St. Nick.Since soon the holiday of giving, he has been giving 100 percent. Wishing him the best of the holiday season.Paul Valentine Bridgette WeiszhaarRomayne SmithTony MarsalaTanya SchnitziusLucy GreeneBill LarsonDon PurdyArt on displayWhen I was first hired as librarian at Tahoe Truckee High School I had a dream of a permanent display of student art in the library. Art teacher Carolyn Keigley agreed with that, and thought other displays throughout the school would be a good idea too and wrote a grant.Last year the Excellence in Education Foundation funded a grant for Tahoe Truckee High School to install glass enclosed display cases for original student art. Thanks to that grant and the generosity of Tom Beebe Construction, Truckee River Glass, and Channel 6 that dream is a reality.I would like to invite everyone in town see our new art display cases and the fine craftsmanship of the Tom Beebe Construction Company and the student artwork they contain.Jan Polochko Carolyn Keigley
