I am a long-time environmental and land use planner with Pacific Gas & Electric now working as a freelance nature photographer in Durango, Colo. I visited Donner Lake many times during my years in California, and have the following comments on the proposal to build a new museum at Donner Lake.As you know, the entire Lake Tahoe region is becoming more developed and urbanized than most residents or planners ever envisioned, and more than the natural resources of the area can support in a healthy manner. Donner Lake, while long having a residential element along the north shoreline, still has a primitive feel in the remaining areas. In order to preserve this important (and increasingly rare) pristine character, I believe it is in the best interest to build the new museum at the existing parking lot with the existing entrance. Building another museum at another location and/or another entrance just 50 feet up from the existing entrance will result in more disturbed areas at the lake and create more traffic congestion. If archaeological sites are an issue, it should be recognized that previously disturbed areas do not necessarily need to be avoided, and any history or artifacts can be documented and recorded to comply with current cultural resource regulations. In short, I believe it is in the best interests of the public and the Donner Lake area to provide an educational experience for the public with the least amount of disturbance to the aesthetic and natural resource values of the area. Larry CarverDurango, Colo. You cannot imagine how deeply distressed I was upon seeing the photo in the March 18 Sierra Sun of the pedestrians pushing a baby in a stroller towards the railroad under crossing on U.S. Highway 89. This is so unnecessary. Prior to last fall, the cost to ride the bus from West River Street to the hospital or to town was $1.50 each way or $3 for the round trip. However, through the generosity of Placer County, the operator of the T.A.R.T. system, as well as the Town of Truckee, since last September arrangements have been in place that residents of the Donner Creek Mobile Home Park can ride safely through the underpass for 60 cents for the round trip. Why would people risk their lives and the lives of their babies by walking through the mousehole instead of riding the bus? Especially when anyone in the park who might not have the 60 cents for the bus can tell the manager and tickets at no cost would be provided for them by benefactors. We need a pedestrian tunnel through the mousehole. Not 10 years from now, but right now. Some day a driver traveling north is going to be surprised to see baby carriages on the road, will instinctively cramp the wheel to the left, sideswiping a southbound car, and the tunnel will be littered with carnage. No one in Truckee wants this to happen. Let’s encourage the people of Donner Creek Park to accept the generosity offered to them, and ride the bus.George RobertsonTruckeeDont entrap my soulI can’t help but imagine myself in Terri Schiavo’s situation. I am dumbfounded and amazed that the very same people who have no problem sending our finest young men and women off to die in a questionable foreign war are now claiming that they are promoting a culture of life by bringing the full weight of the federal government to bear on what is by definition a very private and personal decision about the right to die.I guess it’s OK to force someone to die under the banner of God and country, but it’s not OK to exercise the right to die with dignity.Personally, it terrifies and sickens me to think that a spiritual and intellectual light-weight like George W. Bush could have a hand in forcing the entrapment of my soul in a deteriorating shell. We all need to take a hard look at what is happening here. The Christian right is attempting to define our lives for us. We are moving closer and closer to becoming a theocracy, and that should scare everyone.Lore’ McLarenTruckee
