I was appalled when I read two letters to the editor in the April 8 edition of the Sierra Sun regarding the pursuit between Truckee Police Chief Scott Berry and David Kurrle. I think the people who wrote those letters have no idea what they are talking about and are just looking for a reason to hate the Truckee Police Department.
Before Truckee had its own police department, the only officers we had were those of Nevada County Sheriff’s Office. With all due respect to NCSO,-I don’t remember ever reading anything negative about them in the newspaper because, obviously, they didn’t have as much of an effect on the town of Truckee as the current police do. I think those two authors need to put their “cop-hating” feelings aside, jump off the “cop-hating” band wagon and seriously consider the good that Chief Berry and his staff have done for this community.
The only facts that these two authors know are what they read in the paper and, with no insult intended to the reporters and staff of the Sierra Sun, what is published in the paper is only the “tip of the iceberg” of what really happened. If you weren’t there, you don’t know, so don’t make false accusations. Who knows? Maybe Chief Berry did make a mistake (in my opinion, I honestly don’t think so), but if he did, then I’m sure he’s living with it every single day and doesn’t need the peanut gallery making him feel worse. My heart goes out to the Kurrle family. I knew David, not well, but I knew him. If he was being pursued by a cop, however, chances are he did something to warrant the pursuit. The Truckee Police Department has employed very good men and women who risk their lives for this community every day. They don’t put on a bullet proof vest just to go out and say “Let’s see… who’s day can I royally screw up today?” You only find those cops in the movies.

Mistakes do happen, but it was unfortunate that following such a great Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce mixer at The Real Graphic Source April 19, the photos in the Sierra Sun mistakenly identified the mixer at another member’s location. The Real Graphic Source is located in the Pioneer Commerce Center, offering a wide array of services including signs and graphics; graphic design; blueprint copies; CAD plotting; and much more. Please support The Real Graphic Source, in addition to all our very generous Chamber members.
