Readers Write: Elect Eagan, Hetherington, Van Berkem

I have attended numerous Airport Board and ACAT, the airport advisory committee, meetings for the past 4 years. I have observed Board Members Kathleen Eagan and Mary Hetherington and ACAT Chair Tom Van Berkem in action. There are four candidates seeking the three board seats that are open. Eagan and Hetherington deserve to be re-elected. Van Berkem has demonstrated that he is ready to fill the vacancy created by Paul Vatistas, who is reluctantly stepping down to devote more time to his business.

Accomplishments by the current board include:

1. Proactive outreach to airport stakeholders.

2. Professional vision and guidance in setting policy.

3. Wise use of taxpayer money.

4. Steady progress in reducing airport generated noise.

5. Fully supported efforts to reduce fire danger.

6. Acquisition of the Waddel Ranch and Ponderosa Golf course to preserve open space near the airport.

Eagan and Hetherington and their fellow board members believe in honest and respectful dialogue and listening to diverse opinions. Pilots, developers, and local families share many common values and can work together to solve challenges. I have watched Eagan and Hetherington thoughtfully analyze issues, listen, and make decisions in the best interest of all airport stakeholders. Van Berkem is ready to fill Vatistas’ open seat. Through his leadership on the ACAT committee, Van Berkem has become knowledgeable about the issues facing the board and shares the board member’s approach to resolving issues. He will make an excellent board member.

I fully support Kathleen Eagan, Mary Hetherington, and Tom Van Berkem in the upcoming airport board election. They deserve your support so they can continue the positive momentum going at the airport.
