Readers Write: Tax options

Gina Brown
Truckee

We recently received in the mail a large postcard sent by the Town of Truckee with an update about Measure A. They included five pictures and gave us two choices: Whether Measure A funding should be extended without increasing the tax rate, or allowed to expire and road repair and maintenance cut. They also gave us five different options to voice our opinion for high, medium or low priority between vehicle road maintenance, safety and bicycle or pedestrian road improvement.

I would have preferred the Town of Truckee listed the following information instead:

– How much they have received from Measure A from its inception to date.

– How much money was spent in the different options offered in the postcard.

– How much money was spent on administrative tasks.

The above information would have given us a clearer picture about how our funds are being used. Whichever department in the Town of Truckee is responsible for the production of this postcard, please know that when I finished reading the postcard, I felt it was an insult to our intellect. We do need more accountability from elected and paid officials, including more explicit information about any additional infrastructure, i.e, additional roads planned each time they approve new developments downtown and elsewhere.

We might be too busy working so we can pay for all the additional taxes, but this is not the first time we are asking via this newspaper for more accountability, specifically from the planning department. There is no need to spend extra money mailing postcards. Your response could be printed on this paper or let us know via this paper, the information has been posted on your website.
