Readers Write: Utmost respect
My husband and I owned one-quarter share of a home in Tahoe Donner before we had our children so I still feel a strong connection with the Truckee/Lake Tahoe community. Steven Merrill, a member of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, has made a request of the TRPA board, which includes our Placer County Supervisor Bruce Kranz and former Assemblyman Tim Leslie, to reconsider their vote, which ended in 7-6 in favor of stoplights and four lanes versus roundabouts and three lanes as a solution for traffic problems facing Kings Beach.
This vote was against the recommendation of the Placer County Planning Commission, TRPA Planning Commission, League to Save Lake Tahoe, Sierra Business Council and the majority of local residents.
I do not claim to know all the issues surrounding this project, but the fact that this is a highly delicate issue and could affect decision-making on future projects, I most definitely feel at the very least TRPA should rethink this vote. Think about Europe, older than the U.S., with its many roundabouts and the City of Davis, a very forward-thinking community. The roundabouts that are located at the Highway 89/Tahoe City exit off Highway 80 and the one in downtown Truckee work fabulously. Roundabouts are a brilliant and innovative alternative to stoplights.
Placer County residents, taxpayers and voters deserve the respect from the TRPA board to accept this request to reconsider this vote, but more importantly, our “Jewel of the Sierra,” Lake Tahoe, deserves the utmost respect and consideration!
