Readers write: Where is the critical analysis?

Stephen V. Riley

To date, the TV coverage of the 2008 Presidential campaign has been disappointing, failing to question the shallow rhetoric offered by the two leading presidential candidates. Third-party candidates offer far more critical analysis when you get a chance to hear their views.

Because of this lack of genuine critical analysis, flag waving, patriotism and personal attacks on opposing candidates seems to be the order of the day. In a presidential election year, it is important for the public to know the vital issues facing our nation, but the U.S. remains a divided and bewildered nation. Our nation is being torn apart by conflicting ideas of patriotism, religious nationalism, terrorism, war, national security and a new cold war with Russia.

The major part of the problem is that the U.S. is made up of distracted consumer citizens of the American Empire who do not care to know how our nation affects other people and other nations. Our nation is led by hidden “powers that be” that are bent on U.S. hegemony all over the world.

American citizens should be asking why is our nation being manipulated by exaggerated patriotism; why is our nation being manipulated by the fear of terrorism; why is our nation being so accepting of preemptive war; and why is our nation so tolerant of national security suppressing public dissent?

In summary, American citizens should be asking: Why is our nation not a healing force in the world rather than a destructive force of empire?
