Ride of the Week

Emma Garrard/Sierra SunThe Zamboni ice resurfacer.

How long has park and recs owned the unit?Probably eight to 10 years. How many times do you clean the ice?Three times a day, in the morning and then at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.What does it run on?DieselHow fast does it go?We dont take it out of second. It could probably go 20 mph.How does the Zamboni work? An auger spins around with a blade and shaves off pieces of ice and stores it, mixing it with water and then lays down the water that becomes ice.Where do you store it?It lives at the park. We wash and wax it before we hook up the Zamboni.Do you use the tractor in the summer?Yes, we use it for lawn maintenance. Its a lot cheaper than having a separate Zamboni.Do you like driving it?Its a blast. Its also peaceful because theres no traffic. Its one of the reason people come to the ice rink: Its the unsung hero. The Sierra Suns Emma Garrard conducted this weeks Ride of the Week interview and photo shoot. Send suggestions for future interviews to editor@sierrasun.com, with Ride of the Week in the subject line.
