Patrick McCartney/Sierra SunPacific Built marine engineering of Tahoe City modified a Vietnam-era Light Amphibious Resupply Cargo boat to use as a platform for pile driving and other operations.

It’s a Light Amphibious Resupply Cargo vessel rated at 5 tons. It was used in the Vietnam era as a tender for ships that couldn’t get into a port.

Marine construction. Pier building, pile driving, shoreline erosion. Now we’re doing some salvage. We’ve gone down for several airplanes, brought up parts of several boats. It’s also part of the EPA spill response team, with spill-response equipment installed.

We put pontoons on the boat for stability. With the heavy equipment, the boat would roll over without the pontoons. Plus, it gives us a large work area.

No. Most of our jobs are at Lake Tahoe. During the construction moratorium in the 1980s, we did dredging from Colorado to the Columbia River.

We have three, two LARC-5’s and a LARC-15 rated at 15 tons. We bought them for between $5,000 and $10,000 as long ago as 30 years at government auction or second-hand from other owners. If you tried to buy one today, it would cost between $50,000 and $100,000.

The LARC-5 has a 300-hp diesel engine. The LARC-15 has two 300-hp engines.

I’ve bought a 1943 gunboat, 54 feet long, that we’ll add a 10-foot fantail to so it will look like the SS Tahoe. But we won’t finish it until next year.
