Since late April, Donner Trail Elementaryand#8217;s teacher Kathee Hansen and her second and third grade students carefully cared for the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout eggs, observing and learning about the trout life cycle and the importance of native fish in local waterways. Hansenand#8217;s and other participating classes within the Tahoe/Truckee area received more than 100 LCT eggs April 26, raised at the Lahontan Fish Hatchery in Gardnerville, Nev. The class carefully counted the fish and#8220;fryand#8221; before releasing them June 9 at the Martis catch and release site near Martis reservoir. The students, along with parent support, recorded they raised and released 99 healthy fry; losing only 15 along the way and removed six unhatched eggs. A very successful release! For this group of small fry and#8230; school is just starting!

Trout in the Classroom is made possible through funding from Proposition 50, and partnership support of SWEP, UC Davis and TERC, Cal Trout, Department of Fish and Game and many dedicated teachers! Special thanks this year goes to Cal Trout for the generous donation of three brand new tanks and equipment to local classrooms for Trout in the Classroom.
