Schoolyard gets revamped

After Truckee Elementary school received a facelift in the summer of 2002, the Parent Teacher Organization decided to revamp the school’s old play structure. The cost was $70,000, and everyone got involved in some way or another.

“We did everything under the sun [to raise money],” said Phebe Bell, the head of the PTO. “Fund-raisers included bake sales, barbecues, and lots of local business donations.”Even some of the students got involved.

“I liked having some say in what’s happening with the new playground,” said Blair Kearney, a student at Truckee Elementary, which recently received a new gymnasium and lawn of “Field Turf.” The reasons for installing a whole new playground? The old playset was only designed to entertain 200-some kids, making the structure too small for the growing school population. Also, the original structure was more than 30 years old and did not comply with the American Disabilities Act. The act states that all new construction has to have handicapped accessible ramps and all doors need to be three feet wide or more to accommodate a wheelchair. The new set, however, will be handicapped accessible.

Playgrounds by Design manufactured the product and is subcontracting Blanchard Construction to do the installation. Both companies are based in Sacramento. The playground will consist of three slides, a climbing wall, a three-bay arch swing with a total of six swings, a track ride called a “monorail,” and a miniature backhoe toy to dig in the sand. It will also have two, three-foot-wide handicapped accessible ramps to comply with the ADA.
