Scraps Bakery moves to Brickelltown
A social hub for pets?
With dogs partaking in weekly ice cream socials and humans drinking wine out of dog dishes, Scraps Dog Bakery might be just that.
After one year at its location on Northwoods and Donner Pass Road, the pet supply store and bakery moved to the Hunt House in Brickelltown and the owners began offering events for pets and people.
“The average person doesn’t come in, buy their stuff and leave,” said Christy Cranmer, owner and founder of Scraps.
Inside Scraps, people will find toys, collars, leashes and dog bakery treats – made by a French baker in Reno. There’s pet stuff for humans, like greeting cards, candles and doormats. The new location also has coffee drinks and water, with proceeds going to the Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe.
One area of the new site takes a holistic approach to pet health and nutrition, with education materials, natural remedies, vitamins and pet food. In addition to traditional pet food, Scraps offers everything people need to get their dog on the raw diet.
Cranmer, who used to be a vet technician, offers a free label consultation so people can find out what exactly is in their pets’ food.
With Scraps’ new location in Brickelltown, which is roughly three times the size of the old store, Cranmer could expand her inventory.
“We ran out of space (in the old store). We were turning over our inventory too fast,” she said.
Cranmer and her partner, Michelle Shumway, are still putting the finishing touches on the store. To brighten the new space, artist Sara Smith is painting a mural of a dog scene. Her art will also be featured in Scraps in October and November.
From the art on the walls to the Chihuahua empa-adas in the bakery, it’s all part of getting people inside Scraps to do more than spend money and leave, Cramner said.
“We want people to hang out. We want this to be a social place for pets and their people.”
