Sierra College Deanandamp;#8217;s Lecture Series: Experts andamp; Insights brings Cleopatra to Sierra College

Special to the Sun

TRUCKEE, Calif. andamp;#8212; The mystery and allure of Cleopatra have been the foundation for literature and popular media for centuries. According to Classics lecturer Emerita, Charlayne Allan, the Romans saw Cleopatra as a sexual temptress leading good men astray. To Chaucer, she was a model of a good wife. Other perspectives reveal Cleopatra as the heroine of Shakespeareandamp;#8217;s memorable love story, and she was portrayed as a helpless (usually nude and swooning) victim by Renaissance artists. Who was this most famous woman of antiquity? Professor Allan will present an illustrated lecture exploring the reality of this last queen of Egypt and dispel some of the myths that surrounded her andamp;#8212; even in her own lifetime. Allan enchanted the Experts andamp; Insights audience last year with her slides and stories about ancient women in the modern world. She returns to Sierra College Friday, June 10, 7:30 p.m. to broaden awareness of the many literary and historical depictions of Cleopatra and to challenge perceptions of the campy queen portrayed by Elizabeth Taylor in Joseph Mankiewiczandamp;#8217;s extravaganza.Experts andamp; Insights, the 2010/11 Deanandamp;#8217;s Lecture Series, celebrates lifelong learning by examining a variety of topics from an academic viewpoint. Later this summer, Experts andamp; Insights will feature Ruth Anne Kocour on andamp;#8220;Walking the War Zones of Pakistanandamp;#8221; (Friday, July 8) and Carole Sesko on andamp;#8220;How to Look at Contemporary Artandamp;#8221; (Friday, Aug. 12.)
