Sierra College Tahoe-Truckee Dean’s Lecture Series: Experts & Insights

TRUCKEE, Calif. – Photosynthesis. It’s the most important process for life on earth. Almost all animals ultimately depend upon plants and algae to make high-energy food molecules and oxygen via photosynthesis. Join Dr. Nan Carnal at Sierra College on Friday, Sept. 10 as she describes how plants are the earth’s natural carbon dioxide capture and sequestration system. Carnal’s passion is evident as she defines photosynthesis as “an amazing and fantastically interesting process that uses sunlight to create new organic molecules from CO2 and water. These high energy organic molecules support plant growth and allow plants to be the base of the food chain for all animals.”Carnal will gear her presentation to the non-scientist, covering how plants acquire carbon dioxide and convert it to high-energy plant biomass as well as how solar energy is utilized to drive biomass production. This presentation is part of Experts & Insights, a community-based lecture/discussion program in the Sierra College Dean’s Lecture Series where each month, a different topic is examined from an academic viewpoint.
