Sierra Expeditionary Learning School update

Sierra Expeditionary Learning School (SELS) held information nights in Truckee, Tahoe City, and Kings Beach in March and April to inform interested families about the new public charter school. The school is scheduled to open in Truckee, this fall and will provide an educational alternative for the Tahoe/Truckee Unified School District.

Many members of the Tahoe-Truckee community have expressed interest in the Sierra Expeditionary Learning School. SELS has been accepting enrollment applications at the information sessions and has been successful in receiving applications for the 2010/11 school year. A public lottery will be held April 27 at the Truckee Veterans Hall at 6 p.m. to determine admissions. Following the event, applicants family number will be placed on the SELS website to inform applicants if they were selected.

SELS will be a tuition-free public school operating independently under the district. SELS will offer Expeditionary Learning curriculum, a research-based, hands-on approach. Expeditionary Learning has a 16-year track record of success in schools nationwide and has been credited with improving test scores and increasing student motivation and achievement, particularly in low-income and poor-performing districts.
