Sierra Sun editorial: Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue needs a hand

TAHOE-TRUCKEE — This week was not a particularly good one in terms of upcoming winter sports races for the Lake Tahoe region.
First, the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association announced Friday that Squaw Valley had canceled its March 4-8 World Cup skicross and snowboardcross races. It would have been the first World Cup event at the famed resort since 1969, but, alas, another terrible winter forced Andy Wirth’s hand.
Still, we’re confident the resort, which made the decision in an effort to keep pass holders and locals happy, can rebound.
Then, on Tuesday, we learned the same fate fell on the March 1 Great Ski Race, and now the hugely popular fundraiser won’t happen for the third time in four years.
This one stings a lot. For one thing, the race’s colorful tradition yet again won’t be on display. But more importantly, this is a big hit for Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue, which relies on the event for a major portion of proceeds to help keep it operational.
Many volunteers every year put their lives on the line for Tahoe Nordic Search & Rescue to make sure locals and visitors are safe when they venture into the Tahoe-Truckee backcountry. Without their dedication, we would without a doubt be reporting on more tragic stories.
With that in mind, we urge the Tahoe-Truckee community to come together and help out one of this region’s most valuable organizations. To make a donation, go to tahoenordicsar.com, and scroll to the bottom of the page. Information is listed for donations via PayPal or mail.
