Sierra Sun Publisher’s Note: Moving on from North Tahoe-Truckee

Michael Gelbman

TAHOE-TRUCKEE, Calif. — Dear readers,

I’m writing this week to inform our communities that this month will be my last as publisher of SierraSun.com and the Sierra Sun and North Lake Tahoe Bonanza newspapers.

Recently, I accepted an offer from The Independent in Ashland, Ky., to become the newspaper’s advertising director. This was by far the most difficult decision I have made in my career. I love my job, my team, and the community. Plus, I live at Lake Tahoe — nothing is better than this.

However, in the end, this move will allow both my wife, Kelly, and me to be closer to our families in Michigan and Florida.

The past six years have been incredible. I have met so many great people who are passionate about the North Tahoe-Truckee community, and I have had the pleasure of being able to work with many of these individuals through the boards I sit on and partnerships I made.

I would like to thank a few of these partners who have made huge impacts within our community:

Stacy Caldwell: CEO of the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, our partner on the Give Back Tahoe Giving Guide. I am proud of our efforts, and the response the community has provided with donations of $124,000 last year. Further, there is much excitement for this year’s program.

Charlie Riley: Owner of the Hometown Sears Store in Truckee, who has been our partner for the past several years on the Teacher of the Year program. We have many talented teachers in our area who are committed to providing the best education to their students. Being able to recognize their efforts and publish their stories online and in print has been meaningful. Our teachers should all be applauded.

Swift Communications: Owner of the Sierra Sun and North Lake Tahoe Bonanza, for allowing me to work with great people throughout the company and the opportunity to live in a little slice of paradise.

The North Lake Tahoe-Truckee community: The passions you all share for this beautiful area and its people, and making lives better for each other should be shared throughout the nation. The support I received from community members helped me become as successful as I have been, and I have enjoyed meeting each person who graced my daily life.

Most of all, thanks to my staff: They are the best — hard-working, creative, and they show up to work every day with tremendous passion. They have made my experience one that I will always fondly remember.

My last day as publisher is Friday, Oct. 23. Feel free to shoot me an email at mgelbman@sierrasun.com in the meantime.

Most sincerely,

Michael
