Skiing is such a major part of the lives of some people, particularly those who have made a living in the sport, that it is ingrained in their DNA. Such is the case with current and former Squaw Valley ski instructors, who met up at their old stomping grounds of Squaw Valley USA. They had downhill thrills and frills, and some good ol’ reminiscing. The diverse group of instructors represented many decades of teaching during their tenures at Squaw and#8212; close to triple digit in years if you totaled them up! They worked under all the Squaw Valley Ski School directors, ranging from Emille Allais, Joe Marillac, Stan Tomlinson, Dec Daly and Hans Standheiner, with three of the group still plying their trade for current Squaw Valley ski school director Dave Preceit.

The downhill skiing enthusiasts met in the morning for slope time led by Ken Kaneda and Ernst Hager. Joining them for the morning clinic were Chris Fiedler, Dick Lingle, Roger Patching, Rene Robert and Rick Sylvester. The gang swung off the mountain and into Bar 1 with fellow instructors to watch a Warren Miller promo film graciously provided by Tom O’Neill. The video showed many of those in the audience being led by Stan Tomlinson and Dec Daly as they cavorted on the snow and#8220;old styleand#8221; and#8212; plowing through the powder on skinny skis.

Those reuniting to celebrate skiing and enjoy the camaraderie included Hubie Alber, Leroy Hill, Laurel and Tom Lippert, Mo Mailhot, Lamer Parker, Ed Patient, Elissa Slanger, Dick Tash, Wes Thomas, Bill Briner, Bridgette Kaneda, Rick Sylvester, Chris Fiedler, Roger Patching and Jean Fritsch, Ken Kaneda, Sue Bennett, Rene Robert, Jan Huele, Dick Lingle and Les Guilford.

Tidbits and#8230; With all this new snow and excellent ski conditions the Tahoe Cross Country Center up near Dollar Hill in Tahoe City has just announced that it is extending its season another week through Sunday, April 25. Dogs are welcome (with a day or season pass), and on Fridays it’s only $5.
