Students learn from ‘fish in the classroom’

With the sun shining on their excited faces, Mrs. Bockius’ fourth-grade class of Glenshire Elementary School used their newly acquired fish knowledge Wednesday to help the environment.

In April, the class received Lahontan cutthroat trout eggs from Lahontan National Fish Hatchery in Gardnerville. The students raised the fish for a program called Trout in the Classroom. They studied the life cycle of the fish and learned how to measure water temperature and dissolved oxygen in the water.

“We had great success,” said docent Kris Kuyper who teaches science to the class.

In coalition with the program, Kuyper said the Nevada Department of Wildlife and the California Department of Fish and Game are working to restore the species.

The Lahontan cutthroat once thrived in Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake, migrating up the Truckee River to spawn in Lake Tahoe. Commercial fishing and the introduction of other, more aggressive trout strains spelled the end of the Lahontan cutthroat in Tahoe.

At the end of the program Tuesday, the students released the fingerlings into a pond on the golf course at Lahontan where they will remain for a year before being released into the Truckee River.
