Students spread message of peace

In the wake of an uncertain world political climate, teachers, students and staff at Truckee Elementary are trying to send out a positive message.

Motorists may have seen the giant “peace” sign spelled out in red lettering on the school’s chain link fence that parallels Donner Pass Road.

“So far, it’s been rained on and snowed up, but it still seems to be holding up alright,” said school counselor Jan Susman.

The sign was created as part of Truckee Elementary’s “Red Ribbon Week” celebration.

The focus of the week, which was observed in all of the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District sites, was centered on drug, alcohol and tobacco prevention.

Susman said although these topics are still very important to address with elementary-age students, they wanted to expand the celebration.

“We thought this sign was very appropriate considering what is going on in the world right now,” she said. “Peace is really a universal value.”

Susman added that she’d found her students, despite their young age, to be very aware of the state of the world.

“We had a lot of kids of all ages volunteer to help out with it and actually, it took about three whole recesses to complete,” she said. “So far, the response from the public has been very positive. People tell us that it looks great, especially when you’re coming down Northwoods.”

An older friend I made when I began here in 2016 called the other day to talk about the paper. I hadn’t heard from her in awhile and, well, I’ve been here just long enough…
